Honorable mention
IQOI gained an honorable mention for the redesign of a shaft tower (a protected heritage site) into a museum and laboratory for the young generation.
The idea is to create a closed fire proof staircase sculpture that leads to the machines in the upper floors. The generated atmosphere of a mining shaft is broken by a few windows giving access to exclusive views.
Through added balconies the public can enter the different floors of the building and enjoy a view of the industrial landscape and surroundings. Both, the balconies and the staircase sculpture, help furthermore to stay within the German fire protection laws.
The pit-head is transformed into an indoor playground. In the entrance hall there is a sculpture of closed and semi-closed spaces for events and classes for young people.
